The Wairarapa Railway Restoration Society Inc. is a community group that is developing the Carterton Railway Museum. The museum is located in the Carterton Railway Station precinct . The precinct houses railway memorabilia of the type used throughout the Wairarapa since the building of the Wairarapa railway line in the 1870s and 1880s. There is also items from the community.
The Society’s aim is two-fold: to restore the historic station building built in 1880 to its former glory and to develop the precinct to include facilities for steam and diesel powered trains and restored railcars. The society works with other groups with similar interest to achieve its aims.
The museum is open several hours most Sundays. A member of the museum will personally show you around the artifacts. There are some old wagons and small diesel shunting locomotive in the railway yard. There is a good view of these wagons from the station platform.
